Volunteer Positions at Shyalpa Monastery
Shyalpa Monastery is seeking volunteer nurses and math or English language teachers. Situated on Kapan Hill in the northeastern corner of Nepal’s capital city, Kathmandu, our location is neither too remote, nor too immersed in the hectic activity of the city. Minimum commitment 5 months. While travel is restricted during the pandemic, classes will be conducted remotely via zoom, however, when travel is again possible, the monastery offers room and board to its volunteers. Travel and visa expenses are the responsibility of volunteers, although logistical assistance, guidance and orientation will be provided by the volunteer coordinator.
We have a total of approximately 100 monks and nuns, ranging in age from 8 years old to 30. The lower loptra school currently has 3 levels, where children from rural Nepal study fundamental subjects such as Nepali language, Tibetan reading and writing, math and English. The higher shedra school consists of 9 levels, where those who have met their Tibetan language requirements undergo traditional philosophical and ritual studies.
English Teaching: Native or near-native English fluency, as well as comfort with grammatical concepts are required prerequisites for this position. Teaching experience in English language or other subjects is preferred, as is TOEFL certification. Textbooks and other teaching materials can be provided, although creative innovation is encouraged. The ideal candidate should be flexible, curious and self-motivated.
Math Teaching: Competency in foundational mathematical concepts is required. As the classes are of an elementary level, advanced qualifications are not compulsory, but certainly preferred.
Nurse: Volunteers should have RN certification. Responsibilities would include general health screening, basic first aid, and coordination with monastery staff in the event of more serious medical problems.
For application and inquiry, please contact principal, Irene, at irene.zanolli@gmail.com with your resume and cover letter, in which you should highlight any relevant experience or qualification, and which age group/proficiency level you feel you would be most comfortable teaching.
